Lannoo Publishers presents the first monograph of the widely acclaimed Dutch artist Suzanne Jongmans

The old masters brought to life in the serene photos of Suzanne Jongmans

At the end of October, the first monograph by the frequently acclaimed Dutch artist Suzanne Jongmans (1978, Hoeven, the Netherlands) is published by Lannoo Publishers. This book is a complete overview of her oeuvre, in which the traditions of painting, medieval costume design and circular economy come together.

Suzanne Jongmans creates photographs that echo the old masters of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, but with a modern twist: she crafts intricate costumes using recycled plastics, old blankets and used packaging. We can see references and winks to Rembrandt, Vermeer, Velásquez, Van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden.

But that is only one aspect of her work that revolves around tranquility, timelessness and beauty. Jongmans uses simple packaging and disposable materials such as foam and rubber with which she meticulously designs the exquisite costumes for her models – a subtle critique of our consumer society. And so layer after layer accumulates in her oeuvre, contrast after contrast.

The result is a seriers of serene, tranquil photographs that balance between classic and modern, light and dark, life experience and childlike innocence.

Suzanne Jongmans also made commissioned work for Valentino / Moncler.

‘She creates a tension and a meeting between the classical and the modern, the constant and the fugitive. Her images radiate an immanence, through the mundane scraps, we glimpse the divine.’
Karen Van Godtsenhoven, associate curator of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)

‘The serenity which radiates from Dutch and Flemish masterpieces is a real inspiration to me. Especially in these times we live in, in which many impressions can overwhelm us.’
Suzanne Jongmans in The Washington Post
